The proper alignment of your jaw is key to successful treatment. Without a good foundation for your smile, any other orthodontic treatment has a chance to reverse itself, undoing the time and effort needed to get your smile aligned in the first place. Making sure your jaw is healthy and aligned well first helps make sure that other orthodontic treatment goes smoothly.
Depending on your situation, our orthodontist, Dr. Richard Risinger, may suggest using a Herbst appliance in Glastonbury, Connecticut, to improve the position of your jaw. This appliance works to align your upper and lower jaws together and can help solve a number of problems to do with your bite. The appliance functions as an artificial joint between your upper and lower jaws, and it gently pulls them to fit together in a more productive and healthy way.
One of the biggest benefits of using the Herbst appliance is its discreetness, similar to the unassuming nature of Invisalign® clear aligners. You can enjoy the benefits of orthodontic treatment without bulky headgear or other more visible jaw alignment correctors.

Our orthodontist may recommend a Herbst appliance or another type of functional orthodontic treatment to help improve your jaw function. A Herbst appliance is fixed to your molars and includes a metal tube that connects the upper and lower jaw. This tube helps control the position of the jaw in relation to the upper teeth, ensuring that your jaw achieves proper alignment.
Unlike headgear, the Herbst appliance is not removable and is very discreet. It does not require any outward attachments, such as a strap or head cap, and may be visible to others only when you speak or laugh. Herbst orthodontic treatment typically lasts about 12 months and has been proven to reduce patients’ time in braces.
You will probably experience some tenderness or soreness when you begin wearing your Herbst appliance. This is normal, but the discomfort will fade as your mouth adjusts to the appliance. Your appliance may also cause some slight tissue irritation. Until your mouth adjusts, you can use dental wax to ease this irritation and improve your comfort levels. You should avoid eating hard, crunchy or sticky foods that might damage your appliance during your treatment.
